João Assunção

I started dancing at the age of 13 in Lisbon my hometown.
After only 5 months I was already teaching at the dance school.
At the age of 15 i decided to go to Switzerland to train and develop more as a dancer, which lead me to
booking a couple of small gigs and classes in Switzerland. Eventually i ended up living and working in
Zurich and flying back and forth between Portugal and Switzerland for almost one year, until Ambra Succi
invited me to come to Sweden :)

I decided to move to Sweden in 2006 and started teaching at Marikas and later on started working with
Bounce with "Gökboet".

Trough my dancing i've been blessed with the possibility of traveling around Europe teaching and performing
in various shows and events.
When it comes to my training ive never went to a "education".
I’ve been flying around Europe teaching since i was 16 and have had the possibility to take class with big
choreographers and teachers in the events i have been teaching.

Every time i go to a event to teach, I take all the other teachers classes. Taking the opportunity to train and
improve my skills as a dancer, choreographer and teacher.

My inspiration comes from music..(i'm a music junkie), and traveling. Music can make my body twitch and
move like nothing else. I love to wake up in the morning click shuffle and find a new track to choreograph to.
I'm currently touring with the show "insane in the brain" which has been taking us around europe and also
Asia(Hong Kong).

What do you teach in your classes?
In my classes i try to pass on to the students what I'm feeling with the music.
Every choreography i teach in class is a reflection of the track I pick, and/or a mood that I pick to work on
for that class. I try to choreograph something new every class so I can amplify the music hearing/moving
ability in the students.

What do you think are important qualities of a dancer?
Dedication, training, the ability to create and to evolve and work for your talent because it doesn't just fall out
of the trees.

What makes your style unique?
I think what makes my style unique is the fact that I took class with so many people and every time I travel
I try to look into the dance scene of the place where I go so I can bring something new back home to class.

What inspires you?
I get inspired with everything around me( a conversation, something I see on the street or on tv) but I think
that all my music and my traveling around and all the classes from all the amazing dancers/choreographer
helps to inspire all of my movement for class.
